Axolotl:
Axolotl,( Ambystoma mexicanum), a salamander from the family Ambytomatidae( order Caudata), is renowned for its long-term retention of external gills and other larval characteristics. Only Lake Xochimilco, in Mexico City, where the species is listed as critically endangered, is home to it. Any fully developed larva of Ambystoma tigrinum( tiger salamander) that still has its external gills is also referred to as an axolotl.
An axolotl is what?
According to legend, Xolotl, the Aztec god of fire and lightning, pretended to be a salamander in order to avoid being sacrificed. However, these Mexican amphibians are impressive enough on their own, regenerating amputated limbs and maintaining a youthful appearance.
Axolotls, also known as ACK-suh-LAH-tuHl, never outgrow the larval or juvenile stage of salamanders that go through metamorphosis.
They have webbed feet, a dorsal fin that runs down the middle of their body, feathery gills that protrude from their heads like manes, and tails. Adult axolotls can breathe through their skin and maintain their gills, but they also have functioning lungs. Their mouths are turned up in a permanent Mona Lisa smile, as if having children forever did not make them cute enough.
When it’s time to eat, those adorable little smiles can quickly become vacuum cleaners. Crustaceans, mollusks, insect eggs, and small fish are among the prey that axolotls consume.
A common oddity
Since they were first brought to Paris from Mexico in 1864, axelotls have long fascinated the general public. The salamanders, which are easily reproduced in captivity, were first raised by Europeans on the entire continent, marking the start of a thriving pet trade.
Inside wild, they’re mostly grayish dark brown in color. Lighter colored axolotls, especially those with white physiques and pink gills, are commonly bred as pets.
Yet during most countries, the species can’t be traded across international boundaries, in part due to the concern that they’ll be poached from the wild. Axolotls happen to be illegal to own in a few Circumstance. S. states for the equal reason.
Yet axolotls are illegitimate to have in some U. T. states due in part to the risk of them avoiding captivity and interbreeding with local salamanders.
Axolotls are also your common research subject for biologists, thanks to their capacity to regenerate lost or damaged hands or legs, hearts, spinal cords, and in many cases parts of their brains— all without long lasting scarring.
Since scarring prevents tissues from regenerating, finding out the best way and why axolotls do not scratch could unlock human’s ability to regenerate tissue. An April 2021 study, as an example, deciphered how the axolotl’s molecules communicate to encourage regeneration.
